Accompanying Persons
Please remember to apply for a visa at least 6-8 weeks before the Congress. Additional Meetings and Events Need to organise a meeting at IBC2011? If you want to arrange a meeting or other event for your society or organisation, please download the Booking Form from the Congress website and email info@ibc2011.com (with the completed Booking Form attached to your email) to ensure that a suitable room and other facilities can be booked for you. Remember to check the Additional Meetings and Events page on the Congress website regularly because other meetings and events are being added to the list as we become aware of them. Only meetings notified to us by prior to Friday 1 July 2011 will appear in the program book. Accommodation The Congress Secretariat has negotiated great accommodation packages at a number of hotels within a few minutes walk of the Congress venue. To ensure you receive these great rates, you need to book your accommodation through the Congress Secretariat. Please refer to the website for details on accommodation options, and note the deadlines to ensure you get the accommodation you want. As our reserved rooms at the listed hotels fill up we will negotiate rates with other hotels and add them to the website. Student Accommodation for Nomenclature Section only A limited number of student rooms (single bed and shared bathrooms) and apartments are available in residential colleges on the Parkville campus of the University of Melbourne. These rooms will be available only for the week of the Nomenclature Sessions because the students will return that weekend to resume lectures on 25 July. Book rooms by contacting the colleges direct, NOT via the IBC Secretariat. Book soon since the number of rooms is limited. The colleges are a short walk from the Copland Theatre, which is the venue for the Nomenclature Section. They are easily reached by tram no.19 from the city centre - see the Metlink Melbourne site or the Melbourne City site for public transport details. Please visit the website for more information. Help needed from musical delegates Can you sing? Do you play a (portable) musical instrument? We are looking for musically inclined delegates to collaborate with Prof. Wendy Silk before and during the Congress week, culminating in a short performance on Friday 29 July. Dr Silk is part of the ArtScience fusion program at the University of California at Davis, started by biologist Diane Ullman to give artists better access to scientific literacy and to give scientists better access to art as a means of expression. See www.singaboutscience.org and www.youtube.com/results?search_query=HearUBEST for examples of the innovative teaching methods involving writing and performing songs. Right now, Wendy would be delighted to hear from you with suggested lyrics, melodies and/or themes for songs about recent progress in botanical research and with offers to be part of the IBC Song of Botany during the Congress. Please email her on wksilk@ucdavis.edu. With your participation, we will indeed generate a new Song of Botany in Melbourne.
