IBC Australian Garden Field Trip - Wednesday, 27 July 2011
If you won't have time to visit Australia's 85 bio-regions while in Melbourne for the IBC, why not join a field trip to the Australian Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne? Abstract book - order hard copy version now The abstracts for oral and poster presentations will be available to all registered delegates in the delegate satchels. The default version will be electronic, on a CD or USB drive, to reduce the amount of paper used. However, if you would like a hard-copy version instead of electronic, you need to notify the Congress Secretariat by emailing registration@ibc2011.com. We will produce a limited number of hard-copy abstract books based on the requests received by 13 July 2011. You will not be able to request a hard copy onsite or post Congress. Additionally, if you would like BOTH an electronic and hard-copy version of the abstracts, there will be an extra cost of AUD$20. You need to order your hard copy from the Congress Secretariat by emailing registration@ibc2011.com by 13 July 2011 and an updated invoice will be sent to you for payment.

Update for musical delegates about Song of Botany Can you sing? Do you play a (portable) musical instrument? We are looking for musically inclined delegates to collaborate with Prof. Wendy Silk before and during the Congress week, culminating in a short performance on Friday 29 July. Dr Silk is part of the ArtScience fusion program at the University of California at Davis, started by biologist Diane Ullman to give artists better access to scientific literacy and to give scientists better access to art as a means of expression. See www.singaboutscience.org and www.youtube.com/results?search_query=HearUBEST for examples of the innovative teaching methods involving writing and performing songs. Wendy reports on progress as follows: 'I have received expressions of interest from several singers and instrumentalists. Also, Mary Barkworth of Logan kindly forwarded some lyrics from a "Botanical cacophony" led by Ledyard Stebbins at the 1969 Botanical Congress in Montreal! And an exciting recent development is that Helen Ougham of Aberystwyth has written a new lyric, "Peas in our time." Her song commemorates the cloning of one of Mendel's original seven genes. 'So it looks good for a sing-along component to my Friday lecture/demonstration. Of course we welcome new songs for practice. Hope to see you at IBC in Melbourne Monday evening [25th July] for a jam session /rehearsal.' Wendy would be delighted to hear from you with any more suggested lyrics, melodies and/or themes for songs about recent progress in botanical research and with offers to be part of the IBC Song of Botany during the Congress. Please email her on wksilk@ucdavis.edu. With your participation, we will indeed generate a new Song of Botany in Melbourne. IBC 2011 Workshops
